How the demand for rural doctors could be solved

With the demand for doctors and nurses in rural Victoria continues as pressure on regional services grows, a medical expert says medical students need rural exposure to keep them interested in working in regional areas.
Chief executive officer of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia, Peta Rutherford, says rural exposure is extremely influential in the final decision a doctor makes for where they choose to work.
“We need to continue to look at programs, put incentives in place and ensure we give early career doctors, medical students and all the other health professions rural exposure, it’s hugely influential when they make their final decision about longer-term career and training options,” Ms Rutherford said.
