How to stop trucks from getting stuck under the Montague Street bridge

Could a country town in Victoria’s far east hold the key to solving Melbourne’s Montague Street bridge woes?

Apparently so!

It’s rare a week goes by without a truck or bus getting stuck under the infamous overpass in South Melbourne.

But a local worker, who says there’s ‘at least’ one crash a week, said a warning structure he saw before a bridge while visiting the Gippsland town of Bairnsdale could potentially save millions of dollars and potential injury.

 

The beam (pictured above) is placed before the bridge and at the same height and prevents the vehicle from slamming into the actual overpass.

‘It might put a minor scratch or dint on the truck, but everybody learns from it and you certainly don’t write off the truck,’ Simon Greenwood told Neil Mitchell.
