Victorian students have suffered a large drop off in year four reading across the country, following test results on the Progress in International Reading and Literacy Study test.

Victorian students dropped 15 points on the test from 2016 to 2021 post-lockdown.

Research Fellow in Education Policy at the Centre for Independent Studies, Glenn Fahey, believes early reading instruction has “lagged” a little bit, and claimed phonics instruction for early reading to be the most important way to learn how to read.
