How Victoria’s Indigenous treaty could be used for council reform

A former Melbourne councillor and Nillumbik mayor has suggested redrawing council boundaries as part of the proposed Indigenous Treaty.

Peter Clarke told Tom Elliott there were 30 tribes, in rough terms, that existed on the land that is now recognised as Victoria.

He said the council lines could be redrawn to reflect those traditional boundaries, which would also eliminate more than half of existing councils, which Tom Elliott has long-argued is too many.

“That is a conversation you could have,” Peter Clarke said.

“I’d be interested where the people of the City of Moreland, or City of Yarra, or others who are constantly talk about recognition and acknowledgement of First Nations people, where do they go to when it comes to those sorts of matters?

“Why wouldn’t you put it in the conversation?”
