Hay fever suffers are being urged to take precautions as volatile weather continues to sweep the state.

Metropolitan Melbourne is on storm watch for a second consecutive day after a bout of unsettled weather hit parts of the city and surrounding suburbs late on Tuesday.

Respiratory physician at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter Mac Dr Lou Irving said the current conditions brought a greater risk of thunderstorm asthma, as well as hay fever.

“People who are at risk of getting thunderstorm asthma could really be taking precautions now,” Dr Irving told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.

“There’s a lot of pollen around at the moment so that means that people who are sensitive to rye grass will be getting hay fever.”
