Huge plumes of black smoke causing delays on Eastlink
Firefighters are battling out-of-control flames at a tip in Melbourne’s east, with heavy smoke is making its way onto Eastlink.
The CFA and MFB have 26 crews on scene and a further four on the way to the Knox transfer station in Wantirna South, with the fire burning through rubbish in the yard and spreading to nearby grass land.
The fire began just before 2pm and is still not under control.
Speeds have been lowered on Eastlink with black smoke billowing from the blaze, with traffic around the scene being managed by Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria is on standby.
People in the Glen Waverley, Knoxfield, Rowville, Scoresby, Vermont South, Wantirna, Wantirna South and Wheelers Hill areas are warned to stay indoors if possible, but is not a threat to buildings or homes.
