It’s the last thing you want on a Monday morning – being woken up early.

But that’s exactly what happened to many residents by the bay due to a malfunctioning alarm on a ship on Port Phillip.

The distress signal – seven long toots before one short – rang out shortly after 5am for roughly 30 minutes.

Residents from Port Melbourne to Newport, and even as far as South Yarra, reported being woken by the noise.
