‘Hunger games’: Melbourne rental prices rocket to record highs
Melbourne rental prices have rocketed to record highs, jumping as much as 20 per cent in a year and fueling fears about a jump in homelessness and housing stress for low-income households.
Brendan Coates, Economic Policy Program Director at the Grattan Institute, told 3AW Breakfast it had to a “hunger games” scenario between competing tenants.
“People are trying to compete for really scarce housing,” he said.
He said there was one clear solution to fixing the issue.
