Breakthrough in the search for youth justice centre escapees

Tom Elliott

A man is on the run after escaping from a youth justice facility in central Victoria.

Shamus Touhy, 22, escaped from the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on Saturday night along with another inmate, 19-year-old Matthew Piscopo.

Piscopo was found at a residential address in Ballarat this morning.

“He was arrested peacefully,” Detective Inspector Anthony Vella told Neil Mitchell.

Touhy remains at large.

He’s not believed be violent but police are advising members of the public not to approach him and call triple-0 immediately.

A review is underway on how the escape occurred.

The Department of Justice and Community Safety saying it is taking the matter “very seriously”.

The escapes come five years after 20 inmates escaped the facility, with several remaining on the run for two days.
