A surfer has survived a dangerous encounter with a shark east of Lorne, managing to escape with just bite marks to his board and wetsuit.

Marcel Brundler told Tom Elliot he initially thought the shark was a dolphin.

“After I caught a wave, this big fish popped up next to us,” Mr Brundler said.

“I thought it was a dolphin, but it was too big, massive dorsal fin.”

Mr Brundler said he tried to use his board as a shield when what he now believes was a three metre white pointer attacked him.

“He had me in his jaw really.

“I had to punch him until he let go.”

Mr Brundler wasn’t hurt in the incident this morning.
