‘I just cannot believe that this would be true’: Ross can’t cop this stat about global emissions

Termite flatulence is responsible for 20 million tonnes of global methane each year, according new Melbourne research reported in The Herald Sun.

That’s between one and three per cent of all emissions, the  University of Melbourne analysis has found.

“I just cannot believe that this would be true,” Ross said.

“I just don’t see how it would be possible!”

Dr. Philipp Nauer from the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences at the University of Melbourne told Ross and John the methane is because of the termites’ diet.

“All the insects that eat wood and material that is hard to digest, that requires a microbes to broken down, and these microbes produce the methane,” Dr Nauer said.

“Cockroaches to actually also fart.

“They have their own filters basically, they take care of their own emissions, in the mound they filter a lot out.”

“So eradicating termites is probably not the best solution for our climate!” Dr Nauer said.

“What an extraordinary story!” Ross said.
