‘I just couldn’t believe it’: An emotional Chris Waller reflects on historic Melbourne Cup triumph

Verry Elleegant trainer Chris Waller says he was shaking his head in disbelief as the six-year-old mare came from behind to claim a stunning Melbourne Cup.

It was Waller’s first Melbourne Cup after years of training dominance, including star mare Winx.

He told Ross and Russ he got emotional just thinking about it less than 24 hours after the historic win.

“The last 100 (metres) I’m just thinking ‘Ooo, something’s going to have to be good to beat her now’ and I just couldn’t believe it guys,” he said on 3AW Breakfast.

“I was just shaking my head, and just thinking about it now it really starts to hit home.”
