IDEAS FACTORY

Neil Mitchell wants to know how we can improve Melbourne’s beaches.

Beachgoers have had a tough time this summer, being intermittently unable to attend various beaches due to environmental concerns.

But there are other factors keeping people away from the shoreline: litter, limited parking spaces, and under-developed infrastructure are all possible reasons.

Ross MacDowell from the iconic ocean-swimming group Brighton Icebergers told Neil the piers along the bay could be so much more than just ‘platforms for fishermen’.

‘They could be developed as tourist destinations,’ he said.

Similarly, Mr MacDowell said places like angling and sailing clubs, which occupy prime real estate, could be converted into everyday facilities for the general public.

3AW listeners said pollution and inaccessibility are factors keeping them away.
