As more people look to the cheaper illicit cigarettes, taxpayers are now being forced to cover the healthcare cost for smokers due to the federal government’s tobacco excise policy.

Former Australian Federal Police detective Rohan Pike told 3AW host Shane McInnes the government’s lack of foresight has led to them having to dip into taxpayer dollars.

“A lot of clever people have told them [the government] what they should be doing and they’re not listening to that advice,” Mr Pike said on 3AW Mornings.
