Tom Elliott says the imminent risk of power blackouts should be a wake-up call for Australia about energy supply.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has taken the extraordinary step of suspending the spot market for wholesale electricity because of the threat the power may go out.

Tom Elliott has long questioned Australia’s approach to the issue.

“It still amazes me that we are in a part of the world that is blessed with an abundance of natural resources – we have that many different ways to generate our power – from coal, to gas, to nuclear, to renewables, and yet, somehow, we have this situation where we have a massive shortage of power,” the 3AW Drive host said.

“I don’t want to say I told you so, but for months I have been banging on about the fact there would come a time where there would be a confluence of events – the sun is not shining, it is very cold, there isn’t much wind, power plants will be down for maintenance and they are all the things that have finally happened.

“The chickens are finally come home to roost.”
