An infectious diseases expert says Victoria’s current wave of COVID-19 is likely to be much smaller than previous ones.

It comes after 3960 new cases were announced this week, up from 3319 cases the previous week.

Professor Peter Collignon said that while cases are increasing it’s likely to be less problematic this time around.

“The difference now is we always had a highly vaccinated population,” he said on 3AW Morning.

“But now 90 per cent of Australians have been infected, we’ve got what we call hybrid immunity.

“And that gives you enhanced protection particularly against death and serious disease.”
