Infectious diseases doctor’s message to over-50s as Australia faces ‘clear danger’
More people could soon have access to a fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose, with ATAGI expected to recommend it to all Australians over 50.
Two sources have told The Age advice is being prepared for the government after the national vaccine advisory group met yesterday.
If adopted by the government, the changes would see anyone over 30 eligible to get the additional vaccine, but it would be recommended only for over-50s.
Infectious diseases expert Professor Robert Booy says for over-50s and those with underlying health conditions, getting a fourth-dose of COVID-19 vaccine is a no-brainer.
“If you had a dose six months or more previously, your immunity is starting to wane, it’s not as strong, it’s not as protective against hospitalisation and death,” he told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
“People over 50 have four times the rate of dying as people in their 20s so it’s really worth having for an older person.”
Professor Booy says Australians face “a clear and present danger”.
“We’ve got … real danger from COVID — over 1000 deaths a month — so you can change that equation in your favour by getting vaccinated,” he said.
