WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the world has “never been in a better position to end the pandemic” and emphasised governments must take even stronger action to finish the fight against COVID-19.
His comments come as global weekly COVID-19 deaths reach their lowest point since March 2020.
In Australia, the mandatory isolation period has been reduced from seven days to five days for most people, and infectious diseases expert Nick Coatesworth expects isolation rules will be scrapped altogether by the end of the year.
“I don’t think we’re going to have mandatory isolation by summer,” Dr Coatesworth told Neil Mitchell.
“I think the benefits of full vaccination in the community and hybrid immunity is sufficient.”
