Intent ‘unclear’ as new rules ban F1 drivers from making ‘political statements’
Formula One drivers will require prior written approval in order to make “political statements” from next season.
The new rule comes after an update of the International Sporting Code.
F1 and motorsport journalist for Fox Sports, Michael Lamonato, says it’s unclear what the International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) intent is.
“According to them is they’re merely implementing this clause because it’s part of the International Olympic Committee charter and the FIA is a recognised body of the Olympic Committee so they’re saying there’s nothing untoward about implementing this clause, but on face value of this reading it’s pretty broad … it includes eliminating personal statements, which could be anything,” he told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Tom Elliott.
