Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

The performer rose to fame after recording Nothing Compares 2 U, which became a global hit in 1990, and released 10 studio albums during her career.

Her family released the following statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time”.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford said “I hope she’s finally at peace now because she seemed like such a tortured soul”.

“Just over 12 months ago her 17-year-old son took his own life and that is the worst possible torment or torture for any person.”
