“Is it a healthy body size? Most of us would say no”: Controversial cover features obese model

Cosmopolitan in the UK has caused a stir around the world, with its latest cover featuring a morbidly obese model.

Plus size model Tess Holiday is 5’5 and 130kg, approximately 80kg above her healthy weight.

Neil Mitchell asked Sarah Wilson, former editor of Cosmopolitan Australia, if this was a healthy message to send to young women.

“Tess is something of an icon for this sort of movement, of plus, plus size models,” Sarah said.

“It is a striking image.

“What I would say is that Tess is an activist, a shift from the notion of beauty ideals.

“Without a doubt, it is a very sensationalist move from Cosmopolitan, that’s their motivation, to get people talking, and we’re talking about it on the other side of the world.

“Is it a healthy body size? I think most of us would say, 80kg overweight is not.”
