‘It has kicked right off’: Big flames erupt on the side of the Monash Freeway

Big flames have erupted on the side of the Monash Freeway, which has caused traffic chaos as temperatures soar across the state.

Eyewitnesses Brendan and Phil called in as traffic banks up, with Phil telling Jacqui Felgate the traffic goes all the way back to Springvale Road.

“It has kicked right off,” the 3AW Drive host said.

The Department of Transport have released the following information:

Only the two right outbound lanes on the Monash Freeway are open at Eastlink while fire crews battle a significant grass fire.

Exit the freeway at Wellington Road, divert through Rowville and get back onto the Monash via Stud Road.

The exit from Monash outbound to Eastlink southbound towards Frankston is also closed at the moment.
