‘It’s a cop out’: Caller takes aim at Victoria’s top cop on petrol drive-offs

A 3AW Mornings caller has hit out at Victoria’s top police officer for the force’s attitude to petrol drive-offs.
Darren told Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton the police needed to take responsibility and treat it like a crime.
‘I think the police’s attitude to petrol drive-offs is a cop out,’ he said.
‘The next thing you’re going to say is banks shouldn’t carry cash.’
But Mr Ashton told 3AW Mornings host Tony Jones the service station industry also needed to investigate measures to stamp out the crime.
‘We spend thousands of hours investigating petrol drive-offs and it’s time that could be spent on other crimes,’ he said.
