Nick McCallum can’t understand why e-scooters users simply can’t follow the rules.

His comments come after new data revealed almost 1,000 Victorians landed up in the emergency department last year as a result of scooter-related injuries.

“It seems so simple and we’ve had so many trials yet still there’s problems,” he said on 3AW Drive.

“Every single day in the city you see e-scooter users zipping around the city with no helmets on.”

Transport consultancy group Zipidi founder Stephen Coulter said while the figures looked bad, they could largely be attributed to the sharp rise in e-scooter use.

“There’s huge growth in the use of these scooters,” he told 3AW.

“There’s around about 50 million rides on electric scooters in Victoria.”
