‘It’s 30 or 40 metres into the air’: Flames spotted at Corio oil refinery

Multiple callers to 3AW are reporting seeing flames coming out of the Geelong Oil Refinery in Corio.

Caller Scott told Tony Moclair while those living in the area are used to seeing burn offs at the refinery, he hasn’t seen flames as high as this in the air before.

“I’ve never seen a burn off like this,” he told 3AW.

Fire Rescue Victoria confirms firefighters were called to an incident at the refinery just after 1.30pm.

The issue is understood to have been caused by the failure of two cooling pumps which were blocked with seaweed.

Firefighters will remain at the scene until the system is fully reinstated.

A community advice notice was issued for smoke in the area.
