‘It’s a scandal’: Police have faked 250K breath tests
Police have admitted to faking more than 250,000 roadside breath tests.
The tests are believed to have been faked by the officers by blowing into the straw themselves or, more likely, placing a finger over the straw hole.
The Age journalist Tammy Mills revealed it happened on 258,000 occasions over the past 5.5 years, representing about 1.5 per cent of the all tests.
Police believe the tests were being faked to meet performance targets and no fines were issued.
Ross Stevenson described it as “a scandal” that required action or change.
“The question is, if there is a target system, which I think there is, does that need to be scrapped?” Mills told Ross and John.
:I don’t think this is cops being lazy. I think it’s cops trying to meet targets.
