Article image for ‘It’s a scourge’: Specialist discusses drug use in the AFL

A specialist says AFL players are not immune from drugs, following news a drug test by Melbourne player, Joel Smith, came back positive for cocaine, and Carlton recruit, Elijah Wood will appear in front of court for alleged possession of dangerous drugs.

Specialist sports and exercise physician, Dr Peter Larkins, says it’s a massive problem in society.

“Cocaine is obviously a highly addictive, simulative, drug, it’s associated with erratic behaviour and bad behaviour … it’s a scourge,” he told Shane McInnes, filling in for Sam McClure.
