‘It’s a societal issue’: Former chief magistrate weighs in on the age of criminal responsibility
A former chief magistrate has given his opinion on age of criminal responsibility in Victoria, following the state government’s move to increase the age from 10 to 12 years old.
Advocacy groups pushed to increase the age to 14, but the Andrews government resisted, instead opting for a staggered approach with the aim of increasing the age to 14 within four years.
Nick Pappas KC, is in favour of the change, at least the increase to 12 years old, but believes it is a “societal issue” and questions what age children know they are doing the wrong thing.
