Ariarne Titmus broke Katie Ledecky’s 400 metre freestyle world record at the Australian Swimming Championships overnight.

Her time of 3:56.40 beat Katie Ledecky’s 2016 record by 0.06 seconds.

The Australian swimmer, who spent more than nine weeks out of the water after the Tokyo Olympics, says she “definitely didn’t think at this stage post-Olympics” she’d be swimming as fast as she is.

“I got back in the middle of October, so I had a pretty long break,” she told Ross and Russel.

“I’ve surprised myself!”

Titmus said she knew she was going fast, but she didn’t realise she was at world record pace.

“The only thing I knew was that the crowd was getting louder … I knew that I must have been close,” she said.

“I knew that the time was definitely within my each, but it’s one thing to say that, it’s another thing to do it on the day.”
