Horse euthanised after horror fall on Melbourne Cup day

Champion jockey Joao Moreira has escaped serious injury after a fall in race 4 at Flemington on Cup day.

Sadly, the news was far worse for horse Regal Monarch.

Moreira was set to ride Thomas Hobson in the Melbourne Cup but was ruled out. Apprentice jockey Ben Allen rode in his place.

Moreira did not have to go to hospital.

The horse was able to walk after the fall but left the racecourse in an ambulance.

He was unable to be saved.
