Jacqui Felgate reviews: Theo Theio

My friend’s husband Niko is Greek and when I wanted to know the location of Melbourne’s best Greek he was just the guy to ask.

We headed to Waverley Road in Malvern to Thieo Theo, which means “Uncle Thieo”.

The owner used to be a partner in the famous Jim’s Greek Tavern in Collingwood, and the vibe as soon as you walk through the door is all family. Olive oil is from the family grove in Greece. Servings are as generous as the staff. Before we even sit down ouzo is offered and we left the ordering to our friend.

We started with a trio of dips – eggplant, tzatziki, and taramasalata – all the servings here are SO generous and dips are around $10. Zucchini chips are a seriously underrated chip in my opinion, and these are excellent.

Of course, we couldn’t go past the saganaki and chargrilled octopus – DELICIOUS. Seafood was fresh and cheap – pan fried scallops with herbs garlic and lemon are $22.50 and the grilled calamari was moorish. But the dish of the day was the blue eye served in a delicate lemon sauce. I haven’t eaten a piece of fish as nice as this in a long time! It was perfection.

Of course, no Greek feast is complete without the grill. The lamb cutlets and lamb skewers were juicy and chargrilled, and literally left you salivating.

All pastries are made on site, and we finished the meal with baklava and galaktoboureko – which is a delightful Greek custard in filo and syrup kind of like a vanilla slice, but better.

On Friday night there is a band so you can dance until your heart’s content. Kids are welcome because everyone at Thieo Theo is family.

Pro tip: Don’t eat all day.
