Well at Gilson in South Yarra, one diner loved the experience so much last week, he left a $10,000 tip!
So this week we headed to Domain Road to find out if Gilson is really that good and caught up with Lauren, who was still buzzing after receiving the generous gift.
Gilson is located directly opposite the Tan and it’s the perfect spot for people watching. We spied a number of well-known Melburnians while enjoying a glass of rose in the sunshine!
We started with burrata and a wood fired flatbread. One dining companion is coeliac and the gluten-free option was top notch. Zucchini flowers with buffalo ricotta and chilli honey were delicious, and came as three large flat flowers in a crispy and light batter.
The kingfish crudo was a perfect lunch option, served with bitey jalapeno. Mains were half a kilo of mussels with tomato white wine and focaccia.
And I know you don’t make friends with salad but I couldn’t go past the chopped salad with poached chicken. There were a number of salads on the menu that I want to come back to Gilson and try. Those kinds of salads you simply can’t make (or be bothered) making at home!
We then went full South Yarra and finished with linguine, lobster and chilli. Heaven. Plenty of sweet, delicious lobster meat on buttery soft pasta and a moorish sauce.
And then we met Lauren! She was still emotional when we asked her about the man who left the generous tip. The table mentioned to us they come to Gilson because the staff are amazing. And they are. The service was attentive, professional, not overbearing and all the staff went above and beyond to ensure everyone had a fun afternoon. Lauren says she is heading overseas on a holiday with the tip.
As for me, if I’m in South Yarra again – I’ll definitely be back to Gilson.
