Jacqui Felgate reviews: Melbourne’s best banh mi
The search for Melbourne’s best banh mi was far more challenging than I thought, but I promise you it’s worth it.
After a big day on Cup Day I headed down to Springvale to Bun Bun. The shop was closed for the day according to a piece of paper stuck on the door, so I had a chicken pho and came back on Thursday! And I was not disappointed.
Bun Bun has been making banh mi for over 20 years, and mid-week the queue was out the door. They serve up to 1000 a day!
What makes a great banh mi? There’s the creamy rich pate, egg mayo butter, fresh cucumber, pickled carrot , coriander, spring onion shoots and chilli. The roasted pork in bbq sauce comes with caramelised onions – and a sprinkle of crackling — $6 bucks of pure heaven. The pork is juicy and sweet and there’s very little fat. The little nubs of crackling take it to the next level but the bread is the secret here. Crispy but not chewy and there’s enough in the roll to hold all the fillings in without going soggy.
I went for the bbq pork, but there are multiple options here, including lemongrass chicken, meatball, chicken kebab and plain roast pork. I’m heading back to try the tiger French stick with pate and butter. There’s a reason Bun Bun is number one for banh mi. You won’t find a better way to spend $6.
Pro tip: CASH ONLY (and the two ATMs in the street are out of order. I had to go to Woolies to get cash out!)
