I love a good tart and if there’s one positive thing to come out of lockdown it’s the creation of Tarts Anon.

Owner Gareth Whitton — a former pastry chef at Dinner by Heston — lost his job when the restaurant closed down and was stacking shelves at the local supermarket in 2020 when he and partner Kat began baking in their apartment kitchen to pass the time.

They letterboxed their building and started selling tarts to their neighbours. From there, Tarts Anon (as in anonymous) was born. From two tarts, to 20… he was soon in a shared kitchen space and making 70 a week.

The weekly tart drop would sell out in seconds on Instagram, which led to Gareth and Kat opening a shopfront in Cremorne and a second location in Collingwood — Tarts Anon is the ultimate side hustle! Gareth and Kat now employ more than 20 people… it really is the little business that could.

Tart flavours include the cult smoked pecan and butterscotch (The tart was on an episode of Masterchef!), a silky vanilla custard, Raspberry and Jasmine cheesecake (my fave!)  coconut and pandan, chocolate and caramel and cherry and almond. The fillings are rich, yet delicate and the pastry buttery and golden.

Coffee is by Square One (they share the same premises). You can order your tart by the slice, in a briefcase pack which is five slices from the current menu, or a whole tart. I’ll take two!

Pro tip: you can pre order online to avoid missing out.
