Former Premier Jeff Kennett has again called on the state government to fairly compensate Victoria’s taxi industry.

It follows the decision to legalise ride-sharing services such as Uber.

The government has offered to buy back licences from owners, but at a reduced cost.

Mr Kennett told 3AW it wasn’t enough.

‘If you change the rules ? you’ve got to respect and therefore compensate those who’ve operated under them,’ he said.

Mr Kennett said the taxi industry deserved better.

‘I’ve always very much respected the importance of the taxi industry to Melbourne and Victoria,’ he explained on 3AW.
