Jeff Kennett slams politician alcohol testing plan

‘I’ve never heard anything so bloody ridiculous in all my life.’

That was the frank reaction of former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett when asked if he thought federal ministers should have a blood alcohol reading under 0.05 at all times, as mooted by a former public servant in the Herald Sun this morning.

But Mr Kennett told Justin and Kate politicians are only human, and that when he was Premier of Victoria he and his staff would regularly share a few drinks with the media as they wound down for the day.

‘You would relax, you would say things to one another that you wouldn’t normally say normally,’ Mr Kennett said.

‘There was a genuine respect among journalist and politicians that downtime was downtime, and things were off the record.’
