Former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett says he doesn’t want to see more public holidays in the state, arguing the extra time off is detrimental to small businesses.

His comments come as French President Emmanuel Macron faces criticism over plans to cut two public holidays in the country.

Mr Kennett said his political style has always leaned towards protecting business and the economy, which saw two public holidays axed in his time as leader of the state.

“I am best described as economically conservative but socially liberal,” he said on 3AW.

“In order to look after people in need, you need to look after businesses.”
