‘So happy, so relieved, even a bit emotional’: Melburnians celebrate as lockdown lifts

Many of Melbourne’s COVID-19 restrictions lifted at 11.59pm last night, and many were out at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the end of 77 days of lockdown.

Residents can now leave home for any reason – at any time – and as many as 10 visitors are again allowed to homes in both Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Dining at a pub or a restaurant, and having a treatment at a beauty salon are now also permitted with strict density limits. All customers, as well as staff , must be fully vaccinated.

Today Show reporter Christine Ahern said revellers are still partying at Angel Bar on Bourke Street.

“They started at midnight and they thought they’d be shut now but there’s people still here so they are still going, the DJ is still going, the cocktails are flowing and they’re going to be here as long as people still want to be out and be enjoying a drink!,” she told Ross and Russel.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to here this morning – they’re just so happy, so relieved, even a bit emotional.”

Meanwhile, 50 people keenly awaited the opening of the outdoor pool at Prahran Aquatic Centre this morning.

Today Show reporter Izabella Staskowski, said the swimmers were “so excited to be here” after months of swimming in the freezing bay.

“The first thing they wanted to do for freedom Friday was go for a swim in this 14 degree weather,” she said.

The College Lawn Hotel on Greville Street opened its doors just after 6am for what Sunrise reporter Nathan Templeton described as “keen barflies”.

“They’re cranking up just before lunchtime here but a select group of keen barflies are going to come in now. They’ve just opened up the doors,” he said.
