A council has come under fire for fining a real estate agency for putting out auction signs and flags on the street.

Barry Plant in Wantirna has been targeted by Knox Council for ‘obstructing the footpath’.

Director Adam Sorrell said the fines were ‘silly’ and he had received no complaints from the public about flags or signs.

‘They’ve fined us $500 for having an auction flag out the front hanging over the footpath 15 minutes prior to an auction,’ he told Neil Mitchell.

Mr Sorrell said they had also been fined $500 a pop for putting sandwich boards advertising auctions on median strips.
