Melbourne could be set for a new airport.

The State Government has confirmed it has a long term plan to consider a third airport with reports Koo Wee Rup is the preferred location.

The new airport, to serve one third of the state’s population, is near tourist attractions such as Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula.

But Infrastructure expert Dr Chris Hale has raised questions about the need for a third major airport in Melbourne.

‘The experience of Avalon has not been particularly good over recent years,’ he told 3AW Breakfast.

‘My latest understanding is they are running a plane a day at Avalon.’

Glenn Leeman, owner of Bunyip River Meats in Koo Wee Rup, welcomed the idea.

He said it can take hours in heavy traffic to get to Tullamarine Airport, and the idea has come up before.

‘It always pops up every five, six years,’ he said.
