La Trobe Street blocked due to police operation
UPDATE: A siege in Melbourne’s CBD has ended after police arrested an armed man who was holed up in a La Trobe street restaurant.
Heavily-armed police negotiated with the man, who was wielding a meat cleaver as he dangled from a second-storey window of the Little Ipoh restaurant.
The man smashed the windows, and was seen yelling and throwing objects at police and the public.
The man surrendered shortly after 3pm and is now in police custody.
Several people were evacuated from the area, and police closed La Trobe Street between Queen and Elizabeth.
Victoria Police said there were no hostages or injuries. Police also said the man did not make any threats towards police or the public.
It’s believed police were first called to a dispute at the restaurant about 1pm.
Roads around La Trobe street are expected to re-open shortly.
Police are currently negotiating with a man at a business on Latrobe St. There are no hostages or injuries. Traffic diversions in place.
