Labor’s ‘unconventional pathway’ to victory in Victoria

Former Labor campaign strategist and social researcher Kos Samaras says Labor’s victory in Victoria last night followed a “fairly unconventional pathway”.

“Labor primary vote is the lowest since the 1950s DLP split,” he told 3AW’s Sunday Morning program.

“For them to secure close to 50, or above 50 seats, with that sort of primary, does tell us we are dealing with a new sort of political paradigm when it comes to how the major parties form government.”

Mr Samaras says the Liberal Party faces a serious challenge going forward.

“Something drastic will have to happen within voters under the age of 40, and by 2026 voters under the age of 45, for them to get anywhere near close to the sort of numbers they are requiring,” he said.
