So there you go, folks! Everyone’s been asking me, “Lachie, what’s wrong with a simple sausage on bread recipe?” Well, here it is, and it’s exactly what you’ve been craving – no fancy tricks, just good food. Because sometimes, life’s too short for complicated recipes!

Enjoy the Thrill of the Grill, one sausage at a time.

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 quality beef sausages (or your favourite variety!)
  • 4 slices of your favourite white or wholemeal bread (or go for a crusty roll!)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for grilling)
  • 1 small onion (optional, for caramelizing)
  • Your choice of condiments: Tomato sauce, mustard, BBQ sauce, or chutney
  • Fresh herbs (optional, for garnish – parsley or coriander)
  • A pinch of salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Grill/BBQ:
    • Heat your BBQ or grill to medium-high heat, or you can do it in a frying pan if you’re short on a BBQ setup.
    • Lightly oil the grill grates to avoid the sausages sticking.
  2. Sausages on the Grill:
    • Place the sausages on the grill and cook for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure they cook evenly and develop a lovely golden-brown colour on all sides.
    • For an extra juicy twist, you can toss them in a bit of BBQ sauce or your favourite marinade halfway through cooking!
  3. Optional: Caramelized Onions:
    • While the sausages are grilling, slice the onion thinly and toss it onto the grill (or in a frying pan) with a little oil, stirring often until golden and soft.
    • Add a pinch of salt and pepper, and if you’re feeling fancy, drizzle a little balsamic vinegar or brown sugar for added sweetness!
  4. Toast the Bread:
    • While the sausages and onions are sizzling, place the slices of bread (or rolls) on the grill for a minute or two on each side until they’re golden and lightly toasted.
  5. Assembly Time:
    • Once the sausages are cooked through, place each one on a slice of toasted bread.
    • Top with your choice of condiments and optional caramelized onions for added flavour.
  6. Serve & Enjoy:
    • Garnish with a fresh sprinkle of herbs or a dash of extra BBQ sauce if you like a little kick.
    • Grab that plate, serve it up, and enjoy the simple thrill of a BBQ sausage on bread, the perfect Aussie classic!
