The largest ship to ever dock in Victoria will arrive at Port Phillip bay this morning.

Princess Cruises’ Golden Princess weighs 108,000 tonnes, can carry 2500 people and is 40 per cent bigger than any vessel to be based in Melbourne.

Ross and John were on Cruise Watch on Friday morning, tracking the ship from the horizon to Station Pier.

The cruise is set to make 14 visits through until April, stopping at Tasmania, New Zealand and the South Pacific along the way.

Nick Easy, CEO of the Port of Melbourne Corporation, said a total of 76 cruise ships will bring 220,000 passengers and crew to Melbourne from today until May.

Two helicopters followed the ship as it sailed into town with banners reading ‘Melbourne Welcomes’ and ‘Golden Princess’.

3AW Afternoons with Denis Walter will broadcast from the Golden Princess on Friday between 12-3pm.
