Law expert says Matthew Guy’s plan for mandatory sentences won’t make us safe
A Victorian law expert says mandatory sentences are not going to make us safer.
Opposition leader Matthew Guy announced on Tuesday, if elected, he would implement mandatory sentences on repeat violent offenders.
Tania Wolff, councillor with the Law Institute of Victoria has told 3AW Drive, good intentions don’t always have the best outcomes.
‘As a community we all want the same thing, we all want to know what works on crime,’ Councillor Wolff told Nick McCallum.
‘Mandatory sentences and this kind of oppose are not going to make us safer.
‘Which is really what, I think, the announcement is directed towards doing.’
