Lawyers for Cardinal George Pell have taken aim at Victoria Police, on the first day of his fight against historical sexual offence charges.

A four-week committal hearing has begun with Prosecution and Defense finalising administrative matters.

Defense barrister Robert Richter QC told the court, it would be cross examining police in relation to some 21 witness statements, which had not been investigated properly.

He said Victoria Police failed to follow proper protocol for investigating prominent people – because there was a presumption of guilt.

Up to 50 witnesses and complainants will give evidence over the next two weeks, some from a remote witness facility, with the support of trauma dogs.

Richer said regarding the Cardinal’s age and medical condition, it was also important the 76-year-old have someone with him.

The first complainant will give evidence when the hearing resumes in a closed court at 2 o’clock.
