One of Victoria’s leading voices from the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic has reached his tipping point.

And he’s issued an alarming warning as he heads on three months personal leave.

Emergency physician and former AMA president, Dr Stephen Parnis, will finish up today and take a break.

“I’d been planning to have two weeks of leave, but it became clear to me – basically through my wife and family – I needed more than that,” he told Neil Mitchell on Friday.

He said the health care system was broken and staff simply couldn’t keep up with demand.

“The delays that are occurring are costing lives,” Dr Parnis said.

“It is a dangerous place to be, in emergency, as a patient now.

“I think that is utterly unacceptable.

“I’m sick and tired of the evasion during this federal election about the role of the national government in the systems and support, funding wise, for health care and I won’t put up with it any longer.”
