Leading lawyer says it’s likely Djokovic will play at the Australian Open
A leading lawyer says it’s likely Novak Djokovic will be allowed to play in the Australian Open while his visa breach is played out in the courts.
The world number one has spent his first night in immigration detention after his visa was cancelled on arrival in Melbourne.
Partner at Thomson Geer Lawyers, Justin Quill, says he expects an interlocutory injunction will be granted, allowing Djokovic to play.
“I suspect the judge is going to say ‘I’m going to grant an interlocutory injunction, so basically a temporary injunction, stopping the deportation, and then I’m going to hear this case properly,” he told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.
“The wheels of justice don’t turn quickly, we know that.
“That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to win the case.”
In situations where the real fight is about the interlocutory injunction, Mr Quill says the parties involved usually come to an agreement after the temporary injunction is granted.
“The parties usually … resolve the case and that’s the end of it,” he said.
