Once you reach 21 years old you don’t have to complete the mandatory 120 hours of practice driving required of learner drivers, but is that safe?

Neil Mitchell spoke with Stan Gates, President of the Australian Driver Trainers Association Victoria who has lobbied the government for a change in the rules.

‘The 120 hours has been proven to create more safe drivers on the road,’ he argued.

Once you reach 21 years old, he said, the regulations are too relaxed – ‘there’s no log book to fill out, there are no records to keep.’
