Leigh Matthews backs in umpires amidst Brownlow betting scandal
AFL great Leigh Matthews has defended the umpires’ ability to award votes to the best three players of a particular game.
The AFL umpires have come under scrutiny after an umpire leaked voting information on the Brownlow Medal, leading to bets being made and the league’s integrity coming under question.
Despite this, Matthews believes the umpires are still the right people for the job.
“If it’s the fairest award, who else but the on-field umpires could make that judgment call at the end of a game,” he told 3AW’s Wide World of Sports.
